#116 Namdapha Flying Squirrel

Critically Endangered

There was only one specimen captured in 1981, and that is the last time these were seen. There have been supposed sightings, but it is more likely the Red Giant Flying Squirrel, which is not endangered. They do not have the white tufts below the ears. Wikipedia in fact used to have other pictures that showed live ones, and they were listed as being the Namdapha. I read an article about it, and come to find out the photographer just took them in Namdapha and he felt they were of the red giant as well.

Sometimes I just cannot get a painting to look the way I want it to, and it can be extremely frustrating. I don't know why this one bothers me, and why I don't like it. I mean, it does look better than the photos of it I had to work from. At least my painting doesn't make it look like roadkill or a squirrel rug. My goal was to make it look more alive than the pictures I saw, and so I can be happy because I have accomplished that. Do you ever have days where you know you are craving some sort of food, but you don't know what the food is? Or do you call people to ask them something, and by the time they answer the phone you've completely forgotten what you wanted to ask. It is a similar feeling to that. I'm staring at this and annoyed, but I cannot tell why. I think its stomach looks nice and soft and could use a belly rub, I like its little hand and the colour is pretty accurate. Oh well, the longer I do this the less ones I have that bother me, so I am ok with that.
